We have a brand new course, and it is available exclusively through SeaClan. It is for those of you that are serious about going to sea, realise that there is no escape from the fact that things will go wrong and break (regularly), and want the feeling of self sufficiency and confidence that comes with knowing that you can fix them.

Plenty of fun on the course

The Adapt and Overcome course is a weekend of learning to deal with the challenges that are going to happen and the things that will go wrong when you get out on the water on a small boat. Greater confidence equals more enjoyable sailing.

Come on over to the boat on Friday afternoon/evening for Lisa's cooking and a talk about getting the right attitude to taking a boat to sea, and all that it entails. Spend Saturday and Sunday working through the practicalities of engine basics, electrical testing and repairs, rope work and rigging, and all of the things that can and definitely do go wrong at sea. In the evenings James will talk through experiences and lessons learned. We will even have some time to cover anything you may wish to discuss or time for you to unwind and explore Whitehaven if you wish.

It all started when Chris Pearsall and myself were talking about all of the problems and challenges that we had learnt to overcome; all of the things that break, jam, go missing, and so on. We realised that there was nothing out there and nowhere for people to go to learn about these things. So we decided to fill that gap, and help aspiring sailors to learn what is likely to happen to them at sea and how to overcome them.

Mast climbing on the yacht
It is not mandatory to go up the mast, but it is good for the experience!

The course is aimed at new sailors and anybody who is building their practical abilities as a skipper or crew on a boat. In the past several decades, I have had to deal with all sorts of emergencies from engine failures, jammed winches, dead electrics, broken steering, and unruly crew, and if you keep going to sea in a boat then one day, you will too.

Through engaging topics, practical hands on work, and of course plenty of information sheets so that you can remember everything, this weekend is sure to fill in the gaps that you never covered on other courses.

Steve said after the course:

"Having attended this course I can thoroughly recommend it.

James covered so much of the aspects of what could and does go wrong, with practical information on how to resolve the issues. Done at a level where you are not baffled by science or terminology.

Accommodation on Marian was excellent and Lisa’s cooking and care made the whole experience one not to be missed.

What a team. Highly recommended."

If you would like to come along just get in touch!
